Lot of women around the world have a common problem : Poly cystic Ovarian Syndrome or Poly cystic Ovarian Disease. It not only has symptoms that hits you physically, but also affects you mentally by putting you into depression, lowering your confidence. Lot of symptoms like hair loss, weight gain, difficulty in losing weight, facial hair and body hair, baldness, irregular periods, Acne etc. haunt you.The birth control or the hormonal pills provide less or temporary relief and has lot of side effects.
To all the P COS sufferers, I would like to share my experience of fight against P COS I was a victim of P COS for 9 years. I experienced irregularity of periods at the age of 15. I went into depression and gained a lot of weight due to absence of periods for 6 months. I got no support and people made fun of my appearance. I started losing a lot of hair. My hair reduced by 50% and I had excess hair on my upper lip and near the chin. When I checked with a gynecologist she was not able to diagnose my problem and said that it was common among the girls of my age. I had the same experience with many doctors and they frequently put me on hormonal pills. Well this journey, to find the exact problem took 5 years, until a doctor suggested me to have a abdomen scan . I was diagnosed of P COS. I was happy that finally my problem was found . I was very thankful to the doctor and started taking the medicine prescribed by her. She put me on birth control pills. I was happy taking the medicine as I just wanted to get rid of my problem as soon as possible. The duration of the medication was 3 months. But I started seeing the side effect of medicine during the course of 1st month. I had continuous vomiting( sometimes with blood) and excessive acne with puss on my face and body pain.And when I researched about the medicine, I found out that it had carcinogenic(cancer causing) substances. I was appalled by this and immediately contacted my doctor. She just ignored my question and asked me to continue it .This really scared me and I immediately stopped the intake of medicine. My symptoms aggravated once I stopped them, due to drastic hormonal changes.
After a couple of months I changed to Ayurveda medicines. Well , these medicines helped me a little, but did not cure me completely. They neither had any side effects. I was on Ayurveda medicine for 2 years. However, these medicines helped to maintain weight and control facial hair. But my periods were on and off. They weren’t completely regular. And this irregularity continued for a while . But my scan reports stated that I had no cysts.I was pretty satisfied with it.
After that I got married and had to move to Germany. The weather of Germany is very cold and my symptoms aggravated after 1 year of stay in Germany. I was again diagnosed of P COS in 2011. This put me into depression. I started looking for natural solutions, that was when I met a friend who was well versed in yoga
This was a stepping stone into yoga for P COS for me. I spoke to her about my problem and to my astonishment she suffered from the same problem and got over it with help of yoga. She helped me with my problem with few of the yogic exercises and helped me to get mentally stable. I stopped worrying even if my periods were missed or had weight gain. All I did was to practice the exercises sincerely and keep my mind out of the problem. And that really helped me. Slowly my cycles started getting better(from 60 – 45-30 -28 days). Now,I am happy and healthy, rid of P COS forever. I am completely cured and normal with just few simple yogic exercises and diet changes.
These exercises and remedies are tried and tested. However the results may vary from person to person, depending on the severity and the mental state.

The main key point here is to keep the head straight while bending so that you try to touch the leg with your chin. This helps you create tension in the groin region and the base of the spine and that in turn generates heat. Note that breath is important. Do it slowly . Concentrate on your breath. Exhale while bending and inhale while coming back.
Note: Don’t try to hard to bend completely . You can do it slowly and gradually. Stope for a while when it pains , relax and continue
2. Look at your nose tip ,without the burden of thoughts: Perform this intially for 1 minute and then, as per convenience increase it to 5-10 minutes.
3. Breathing for relaxation.
Breath in slowly with relaxed attention upon the flow of air into your body .While exhaling ,let the air flow out copiously from within all sections of your body ;for this purpose joyously open your mouth as wide as possible ,such that the air can flow out unhindered.Please bear in mind ,that the whole process has to be governed by a sense of relaxation and slowness in order to establish a certain calmness to the whole exercise.
1) Inhalations: It has to be very slow and free of thoughts. The complete focus should be on the breath.
2) Exhalation: Through mouth and make sure you feel the compression in the chest and stomach and sound should not be from throat.The air which is coming out should be warm/hot and not cold.
Follow this relaxation exercise for 10 – 15 minutes before sleep. You tend to yawn during the course of this exercise . Don’t restrict it by closing the mouth. Yawn joyously as it is the stress which is coming out as yawn.
Also make sure that you do the whole exercise in a relaxed manner as doing it otherwise would defeat the whole purpose. Relaxed manner means just concentrating on the breath and keeping your mind off the worries and other thoughts. These exercises should be performed in empty stomach( 3-4 hours after meals)
Overcome myths like: Avoiding of diary products. Diary products are very necessary for the nourishment and avoiding them will not help you. Well, the fact is my problem started subsiding once I started having diary products regularly. Just see to that the milk you get is natural and has very less or no preservative.
Rice, Whole grains, nuts , pulses are good. Any form of natural foods can be taken.
Avoid canned food, cereals, foods which are processed(bread, biscuits, chips,snacks).Preservatives are the greatest culprits.
Avoid anything made of All purpose flour like pizza, burger , white bread etc. Try making your own bread at home with whole grain flour than buying it out.
Have a bowl of variety of Fruits with nuts(esp .Almonds) , sprouts and glass of milk in the morning for breakfast.
Drink a glass of warm water in empty stomach in the morning.
Add herbs like ginger, pepper , fenugreek, Indian gooseberry, turmeric and asafoetida in your diet.
Grind garlic(1 -2 cloves) and mix it with home made clarified butter( 2 spoons) and eat the mixture at-least twice a week after meals.
Drink lot of buttermilk with grated radish( preferably organic) for lunch and dinner.
Make a mixture of turmeric and gram flour with milk. Apply it on face. Leave it to dry and scrub it in the direction opposite to the growth of facial hair. This helps to get rid of facial hair naturally.
Maintain a standard time for your meals everyday. And it is important to have early dinner ( before sunset).
Drink required amount of water. Your body knows the amount of water you need( Drink when you are thirsty).Don’t force your body with lot of water when not required or when not thirsty.
And very importantly, good sound sleep is necessary. Sleep early and wake up early( Do the Breathing for relaxation mentioned in No.3 of yogic exercises before sleep).
A Key trick to relax yourself irrespective of time and place is observing your breath for a while and slowing down your breath. This automatically relaxes you and constant practice of this will keep you always relaxed, help you control your anger, fear and depression.
Try to keep yourself joyous. Things will happen no matter what. It does not change just by getting worried or depressed. Depression and worry makes it worse. Just enjoy the small life you have. You have a wonderful body which has the ability to heal itself. All you have to do is to listen to your body and keep yourself calm and joyous
